Providing a structured transition increases the probability of maximizing the opportunities and minimizing the possible pitfalls during a time of executive transition. It makes sense to view the first 90 days as an opportunity for the new executive (1) to learn as much as possible about the culture of the organization, (2) to develop key working relationships in the system, and (3) to purposefully communicate the aspects of his/her leadership to the organization.
Coaching can be particularly effective during times of executive change: promotions, stretch assignments, and reorganizations. Often, the competencies that have created success in the past are no longer the most effective. A coach can help an executive develop the competencies needed in a new role. The coach serves as an independent sounding board, provides candid feedback, and supports executive learning.
